Bill Clinton’s Book Reviewed

Elisabeth Ahlsén

In 2007, former U.S. president Bill Clinton wrote a book entitled ’Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World’. At a meeting at Marston Hill, Prof. Elisabeth Ahlsen presented a study of the examples of giving in that book. These are not exactly examples of goodness from history (but rather recent and current examples) however it is interesting to explore how non-profit organizations can contribute to a higher quality of life.

After a discussion of the book, including a critical appreciation of the fact that charity can be used as a political investment and as a way of clearing your consciousness, while continuing the practices that give rise to the need for charity, we found that perhaps the most constructive type of giving is the kind of giving that is connected with a requirement that the recipient in his/her turn also gives.
